Roland Mahé Award

The Roland Mahé Prize, valued at $5,000, enables an artist from the Western provinces or the Territories to undertake a creative, training, or professional development project. It is awarded to emerging artists or cultural workers who have been working professionally in theatre for at least one year and no more than ten years, in any capacity. This prize is presented thanks to the generous support of Power Corporation of Canada.

Eligibility criteria

Have worked professionally in the theatre sector for at least one year and for no more than ten years in total, across all experience.

Anchor one’s practice primarily in the Canadian francophone community. By “Canadian francophone community” we mean the provinces where francophones are a linguistic minority. In the case of the Prix Roland Mahé, the practice must be primarily rooted in the western Canadian provinces and the Territories.

Candidates may work in all areas of theatre: playwriting, directing, acting, set design, lighting design, stage management, production management, etc.

A person who has received a Foundation Prize of Excellence cannot apply the following year. However, they are eligible again (if they have been working professionally for no more than ten years) two years after receiving an award. This rule does not apply to recipients of the Suzanne‑Cyr Special Prize, who may apply for another award as early as the following year.

A person who wishes to apply for a collective project in which other creators are involved in the very conception of the work must include, with their application, a letter signed by the other creators participating in the project stating that they agree that their colleague may apply as an individual, even if the project is collective.

Applicants may submit no more than one project per prize. In addition, a person may not win, in the same year, both a regional prize and the Prix national d’excellence RBC – Artiste émergent·e, or the Prize for a Professional Development Project presented by the École Nationale de Théâtre.

All applicants for this prize are automatically eligible for the RBC Excellence Award — Emerging Artist. This $10,000 award, which supports a creative or training project, is given to an emerging artist or emerging cultural worker whose application stands out among all those received for the regional awards.
