The Foundation

La Fondation pour l’avancement du théâtre francophone au Canada was established in June 1999 at the initiative of the Association des théâtres francophones du Canada (ATFC).

It has its head office in Ottawa, in the offices of the ATFC, and can rely on the association’s staff to handle its administration and secretarial services. This keeps operating costs low, allowing it to pass on most of the contributions received to artists.

The Foundation is a Canadian not-for-profit corporation registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency. It is governed by a board of directors representing the various regions of Canada.

Founded by René Cormier, Daniel Cournoyer and Annick Huard, who were all then members of the ATFC board of directors, it was placed under the honorary presidency of Antonine Maillet, who served as the board’s first president.

As part of its mandate, the Fondation pour l’avancement du théâtre francophone au Canada’s mission is to support the development of francophone theatre in minority-language contexts and to promote its excellence. It does so by annually supporting creation and training projects initiated by professional artists, with the aim of advancing their careers and strengthening their roots within a community that is theirs. Likewise, every two years it honours the major contribution of an established artist.
